RELAX
Tasked with designing and building a chair in a few short weeks, I wanted to explore the concept of sensory subversion, or how one might manipulate materials to create a surprising experience that defies encoded perceptual assumptions.
Can cold steel be made to feel warm and sensual to sit in? Can something that looks threatening or even dangerous feel really good?
Playing with a bed of nails concept, I experimented with multiple welding techniques to arrive at different permutations of the RELAX chair. Version 2 of RELAX was exhibited at the Great Exhibition Road Festival in 2021, where guests young and old were invited to experience how surprisingly comfortable it is to sit in.
